Westmead Hospital Refurbishment - Sydney

At the time of award, The Westmead Redevelopment project was one of the largest health refurbishment projects in NSW.

With a goal of transforming the Westmead Health Precinct into an innovative and integrated facility, it is a critical piece of government infrastructure for Western Sydney and beyond.

Originally engaged for $39M of works, Renascent has exceeded client expectations and been awarded $30M in additional works.

Renascent was engaged as a ‘key delivery partner’ for refurbishment of:

• Ambulatory Care: refurbishment of the existing Emergency Department, including 15 new consult rooms, 2 new treatment rooms and support services.
• Operating Theatres: refurbishment of 8 existing operating theatres and 24 open bed bays for the PACU, making these safe and allowing an additional 10 years of operation. Inclusive of support services and an extension for a new plant room.
• Dermatology: refurbishment of dermatology department with total of 7 new consult rooms, 2new procedure rooms and support services.
• Cystic Fibrosis: refurbishment of two areas located in different blocks, including 3-daybeds, 35 inpatient beds,12 N Isolation Rooms 12 consult rooms, clinical support, reception areas and the refurbishment of two lift lobbies.
• Children’s Hospital - Virtual Care Centre: refurbishment, updating and transformation of this space including the achievement of an RW50 acoustic rating.
• Brain Injury Rehabilitation Service: Refurbishment of the existing space in A4B andA4C for the temporary relocation of the BIRS unit.

Renascent’s specialist construction methodologies included:

• Live environment strategy, including infection control, dust management and communications plan, to mitigate risk associated with working adjacent to live operating theatres
• Helicopter Management Plan to keep clear the work area next to a helicopter landing site
• Temporary air-conditioning methodology to ensure minimal disruption during cross over between systems
• Staged and heavily planned drainage works
• Live power outage strategy using Renascent’s unique management solution
• 11,000m2 HAZMAT removal
• Traffic management plan to manage multiple crane lifts in front of the cancer clinic
• Installation of specialist medical equipment including Wilhelm Modular Diffuser, Draegar Pendants, medical services panels, cardiac and body protected services
• Construction of a new lightweight aluminum plantroom housing 13 air handling units

Risks have been effectively mitigated resulting in seamless implementation of all complex works.

A highlight has been our management of the live environment with no issues raised in relation to our stakeholder engagement, dust and infection control, and major services integrations.

The installation of medical equipment was completed to a superior standard and plantroom works have met client expectations, complying with BCA requirements.
