One of our Cadets, Wenzi Lieu, recently volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and UTS to help build homes for families in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. During her one-week trip, Wenzi and her team dedicated five days to construction, working in groups to build three houses.
The team tackled tasks like constructing timber staircases, laying bricks for the ground floor, and backfilling—often without power tools. Wenzi shared a memorable moment of mixing mortar manually on the side of the road instead of using a cement mixer.
"For many of us, this was our first experience with manual labour. The hands-on nature of the project was a valuable way to apply and develop our soft skills in a practical setting which was an enjoyable and engaging contrast from the regular lectures we had."
“It was incredibly rewarding to make a tangible impact in Cambodia, helping families achieve homeownership and providing them with safe and practical living spaces.”
